Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park reopened, Moanalua trails remain closed
O‘AHU -- Following community concerns and discussion amongst various stakeholders, Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park reopened to the public this morning, Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Access to the park's play courts, parking lot, comfort station (bathroom building), playground, pavilion, and grassy areas has resumed under its regular schedule from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
The park was closed on June 13, 2024 as a result of illegal access to the closed Ha‘ikū Stairs and the trails connected to the "Middle Ridge" / Moanalua Sections of the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve. Those trails remain closed, and personnel with the Honolulu Police Department remain posted near the entrance to the trail.
This decision was made to balance the community's use of this valuable park space while taking the Ha‘ikū Stairs deconstruction project and its security needs into account. The 24-hour park closure may be reinstated during active deconstruction if we find the closed trails are being illegally accessed from this park.
"My Moanalua Valley community is close-knit, and while understanding of the necessity of security during deconstruction, strongly voiced the importance of reopening their highly-utilized neighborhood park, especially in light of the announcement of the pause in deconstruction activities," said City Councilmember Radiant Cordero, who represents the area. "Keiki playing at the playground, kūpuna staying active and being social, people having family outings, and friends playing basketball games are just some of the activities that the Valley's neighbors are excited to get back to with the reopening of the park."
We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community while this park was initially closed to assist with that deconstruction project. Removal of the stairway modules already detached from the mountain is on-going while a court decision is awaited regarding the remainder of the deconstruction project.

Without sufficient advanced notice, it may not be possible to fulfill requests.
