One of the beauties of art is the ability to transform spaces with uncommon materials. We are repurposing the fountain that fronts the No. 1 Capitol District Building (which houses Capitol Modern, along with several other state government offices) with huli, or kalo plants. Our artist in residence, Solomon Enos, guided the planting and shared some manaʻo behind the significance of kalo:

“Hāloanapalaukapalili was the firstborn child of Papa (the earth mother) and Wākea (the sky father) and was stillborn. Papa and Wākea wept tears into the soil at the place where he was buried, and from this place first kalo (taro) plant grew. The next-born child was called Hāloa, and he became the progenitor of the Hawaiian people. In this way, we are related to the land through the kalo.

The three main parts of the kalo are the lau (leaves), the hā (the stem), and the makua (corm or root). Together the whole plant is called the ‘ohana (family). Once the plant is harvested, the lau are cut away and the majority of the corm is removed, and what remains is the huli, which includes the hā and just the top of the makua. Huli also means to turn, so once you harvest the kalo, you huli the huli right back into the soil, and the huli we plant today is the same huli that has been planted since time immemorial.”

Twenty-one artworks from the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection are on display in this exhibit, curated by Brieanah Gouveia, curator for the Judiciary History Center (Aliʻiolani Hale). This exhibit explores the layered relationships between justice and power in Hawaiʻi, where diverse traditions coexist among a complex civic history.

Outreach Initiative Program
The SFCA will be granting up to $50,000 to a nonprofit 501(c)3 arts, culture, or humanities organization through this program, to support regional touring and outreach activities. SFCA Grantee Spotlight: Lahaina Arts Guild hosts student art exhibit
A celebration of art by Lahaina students, K-12, at Lahaina Cannery. On display through May 9, 2024. This exhibit is supported in part by public funding from the SFCA.

The Lahaina Arts Guild is dedicated to providing Maui County youth and veterans access to the creative arts through education and artistic opportunities.

In tandem with the centralization of our collections data through the Digital Futures Initiative, Mau ka Leo documents cultural and institutional knowledge as multimedia stories — gathered through conversations, writings, and research. SFCA Board approves 25 artworks, 4 gifts, 2 loans, 5 exhibit visits

At the Wednesday, March 20, 2024 meeting of the SFCA Board of Commissioners Art in Public Places Meeting, twenty-five artworks from four exhibits were approved for purchase, four gifts accepted from the Downtown Art Center, two artwork loans to the Honolulu Museum of Art approved, and five exhibit visits by Art Acquisition Selection Committees were approved. The SFCA Board of Commissioners Art in Public Places Committee has begun scheduling more frequent meetings this year, in part to speed up the process of approving exhibit visits, artwork purchases, and artwork loans.

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
