Hoa Aloha Neighborhood Park welcomes 9th City off-leash dog park

O‘AHU -- Under the shade of a Monkeypod tree, nestled amongst high rises in the Salt Lake community, a new dog park has come to be encouraging canine comradery.

A blessing earlier today marked the official opening of the Hoa Aloha Off-leash Dog Park in Salt Lake. The facility is now available to dog owners and their furry friends during regular park hours, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. To conduct weekly maintenance, the dog park will be closed Tuesday mornings until 12 noon.

"Dogs are not just pets; they are healers, friends, and protectors," said Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation Director Laura H. Thielen. "The joy and appreciation for the outdoors they bring our lives is something we encourage in these public spaces. We aim to make our City parks more and more inviting to responsible dog owners and their canine companions. Mahalo to Councilmember Cordero for her assistance with creating this facility, and to our talented maintenance staff who crafted the facility expertly and efficiently."

Built in conjunction with Honolulu Councilmember Radiant Cordero, the dog park includes water fountains, benches, and two separate fenced-in areas for large and small dogs. Combined the dog parks encompass 10,000 square feet, with 7,000 sq. ft. for large dogs and 3,000 sq. ft. for little pooches.

"The excitement about the completion and opening of the dog park at Hoa Aloha Neighborhood Park is more than just the facility itself, but seeing a project come into fruition from great community-driven response and support from the neighbors and public," said Honolulu City Councilmember Radiant Cordero. "In the Summer of 2022, neighbors and the public responded to my survey to surrounding apartments, businesses, schools, library, area Neighborhood Board and via our newsletters with support to activate the park and support for dog park facilities at Hoa Aloha. I am so grateful for the community response and partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation, as well."

This facility is the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation's 9th off-leash dog parks, with additional plans for more dog parks in Kāne‘ohe and ‘Aiea.

Located at 5080 Ala Loke Street, the nearly 4-acre neighborhood park was first opened to the public in February 1980. It also includes large, open grass areas, a comfort station (bathroom building) renovated in August 2019, and a playground refurbished in April 2017.
