Disaster Response and Recovery Resources
The SFCA website now has a page for Disaster Response and Recovery Resources for artists, cultural practitioners, arts/culture organizations and institutions: sfca.hawaii.gov/resources/disaster-resources. Information linked to includes resources for salvaging fire/smoke damaged family valuables and heirlooms.

Please note that the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency (Hawaiʻi EMA) is supporting wildfire response and recovery efforts in Hawai‘i and Maui counties, including the extensive damage in Lāhainā. Hawaiʻi EMA is maintaining a page of information and updates: August 2023 Maui Wildfires. Please go to Hawaiʻi EMA for information on how to get relief, volunteer, and make donations.

State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) staff and Board of Commissioners’ hearts go out to the many residents, visitors, businesses, cultural practitioners, arts organizations, artists and others who have been affected by the disaster on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island. SFCA is working to identify means of supporting the affected communities.

Today we are sharing SFCA Art in Public Places Collection artworks depicting West Maui and remembering Lāhainā, a national historic landmark, historic district, and former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Current display sites: "Fields Above Lahaina" is at the Department of Transportation (Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Visitor Information Program Lounge); "Lahaina Beach, West Maui" is at Washington Place, first floor meeting room; and "Banyan Tree Morning, Lahaina" at the Department of Health, Tuberculosis Control Program.

SFCA Artists in the Schools Spotlight: 98 Kīhei Elementary students learn about Maui habitats and native animals through artist residency

Ninety-eight Kīhei Charter School fourth and fifth graders had an Artists in the Schools residency with painter Maggie Sutrov earlier this year. During this residency, students practiced close observation and realistic depictions as both scientists and artists. Students also practiced giving and receiving feedback to better express the Maui habitats and native animals they were learning about.

Teaching artist Maggie Sutrov recounted “The [classroom] teachers greatly appreciated the visual arts instruction, since this school values creativity but doesn’t have a visual arts teacher. They appreciated and valued the connections to content they were studying in their classroom. The professional development allowed teachers to both experience and understand the processes used by the teaching artist. Experiencing the process themselves allows them valuable insight, and revisiting and understanding the process allows the teachers to see how they might incorporate it into their own projects.”

Student feedback included “After making this painting of my Hawaiian hawk, I want to study and draw Hawaiian hawks more.” “Before this project, I didn’t feel like I could draw well. Now I feel like I’m good at drawing!”

A classroom teacher reported “It’s hard to get my class’s energy focused as a whole, but they were into it. They didn’t want to stop. It also helped them to be more self directed.”

AITS arts residency grants provide engaging, creative, and fun learning experiences for State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education public and charter schools through residencies with qualified, trained teaching artists from the Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) Roster. Many of these teaching artists integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas, such as language arts, math, social studies, and science, meeting both Fine Arts and other core standards. Call for student artists: 2024 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards Competition and Exhibition
Submissions now open for the 61st Annual Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards! Please help us get the word out to Hawaiʻi students, teachers, and schools. This art competition is open to all state of Hawaiʻi students (public, charter, home, and private) grades 7-12 (ages 13+). Winning entries will be displayed at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. 2024 Poetry Out Loud School Registration now open!
Please help us get the word out to Hawaiʻi high school teachers and students! Poetry Out Loud school registration is now open through December 21, 2023. A partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation, and state and jurisdictional arts agencies, Poetry Out Loud (POL) encourages high school students to learn about great poetry by offering FREE educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition. Students select, memorize, and recite classic and contemporary poems, helping them to master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. 2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi at the Convention Center
The 2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi exhibit, previously on view at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, is now on view at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center in the Pa Kamaliʻi Courtyard (third floor). These high-quality reproductions will be on view for one year (original artworks have been returned to the students).

Young Artists of Hawaiʻi will be on hiatus for 2024 and is scheduled to return in 2025.

Please help us get the word out to nonprofit arts and culture organizations in Hawaiʻi! The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) provides public funds through Biennium Grants to support projects designed to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawaiʻi. Important dates for Fiscal Year 2025 (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025): Intent to closes September 15, 2023; Project Application open September 1 – October 30, 2023. September 1, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Hawaiʻi State Art Museum presents live music performances by Ko-Njoro Trio, Michael de Lara, and Rhiana and the Texans. ʻUkulele Project Hawaii will also be holding a ʻukulele drive for keiki on Maui and Friends of HiSAM’s artist-in-residence, Solomon Enos, will have a silent auction benefiting Maui. Free, all ages welcome evening of art and music! Food vendors will be on site.

For jewelry artist, painter, and printmaker Margaret Barnaby, the natural world surrounding her has always been a forceful inspiration. She uses bright colors and detailed patterns in her large intricate woodblock prints, drawing the viewer into her snapshot of her outdoor world. Testing the Water specifically references the artist’s interest and concern with reintroducing the ʻalalā, the endangered Hawaiian crow, back into the forest, along with using the bird as a metaphor for hope and change. She depicts the three ʻalalā, in an engaging moment, looking inquisitively at each other. One ʻalalā has a twig in its mouth, referencing the fact that these birds use such twigs as tools to forage for food. Barnaby’s artwork has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is a part of various corporate collections, including J. P. Morgan, United Parcel Service, and Texas Instruments. She earned a BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1970, and has received art commissions in Arizona and Pago Pago, American Samoa.

This print was purchased by the SFCA from the Wailoa Center, Hilo, "Hawaiʻi Nei 2021" exhibit for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection. Currently on display in “Accession: recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection” at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum.

After the exhibit, this print will be eligible for placement in hundreds of state government sites across Hawaiʻi.

Born in Honolulu, 1956, artist, educator, writer, and filmmaker Meleanna Meyer received her BA from Stanford in 1978, and then spent a year studying design and photography in Florence, Italy. Her Hawaiian heritage challenges and inspires her to create and bring to the public a greater understanding and appreciation for her homeland. For this dark, haunting and personal work ‘Eia Nā Kini Akua (The Ancestors are With Us) she explains, “I am melding digital, photographic form, with my design background and Hawaiian culture to comment on significant points of my creative life—namely my practices as a Kanaka ‘Ōiwi, and honoring my beliefs of animate energy in all things in nature.”

After the exhibit, this print will be eligible for placement in hundreds of state government sites across Hawaiʻi.

Creatures and Characters Feature UH Artists
“Surprising, unusual and amusing are elements woven into art pieces on display in the newly unveiled “Creatures and Characters” exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Works created by University of Hawaiʻi artists are among the pieces featured which include five UH Mānoa and UH Hilo alumni and seven faculty from UH Mānoa and Windward Community College.”

SFCA Board of Commissioners

Governor Green appoints Sean Connelly, Konrad Ng to SFCA Board of Commissioners
Governor Josh Green has appointed Sean Connelly and Konrad Ng to the SFCA Board of Commissioners effective July 28, 2023. Connelly is to serve as At-Large and Ng as chairperson. “Both Sean and Konrad come to the SFCA with great qualifications and understanding of the SFCA and community needs. We are excited to have these two talented individuals on our team” said Karen Ewald, Interim Executive Director.

From the Office of the Governor’s News Release: Konrad Ng has two decades of experience in the arts as a senior executive, curator, and educator. He was also a film programmer at the Hawai‘i International Film Festival, the first Curator of Film and Video at the Honolulu Museum of Art, a founding faculty member in the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa, and the executive director of Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture, & Design.

Sean Connelly graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has been a lecturer at several universities, most recently, Connelly was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Furthermore, he had many of his solo exhibitions displayed such as the “Learning from Lē‘ahi” sculpture at the Kapi‘olani Community College Koa Gallery. Connelly has curated many selected exhibitions, films, and new media projects.

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.

HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
