Governor Green appoints Sean Connelly and Konrad Ng to SFCA Board of Commissioners
Governor Josh Green has appointed Sean Connelly and Konrad Ng to the SFCA Commission effective immediately. Connelly is to serve as At-Large and Ng as chairperson. “Both Sean and Konrad come to the SFCA with great qualifications and understanding of the SFCA and community needs. We are excited to have these two talented individuals on our team” said Karen Ewald, Interim Executive Director.

SFCA Art in Public Places

SFCA permanent works of art by Mark Chai installed in the new Mauka Terminal at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport

“‘Iwa Soaring” and “Kawaihapai”, two suspended polycarbonate resin sculptures by Mark Chai, were recently installed in the new Mauka terminal. Coming soon are works by Sean K.L. New Exhibit “Creatures and Characters” now open at State Art Museum
Through a diverse mix of media and artistic approaches, the depictions of creatures and characters suggest stories and ideas that unfold in surprising, unusual, and amusing ways. This exhibit is intended for all ages, with a special focus on students in the museum’s Art Bento program for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools. The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum is a learning laboratory for thousands of elementary school students every year in the Art Bento program, using artworks to practice observation, critical thinking, and communication skills along with exploring their creativity. The exhibit is scheduled to run through summer 2024.

“Creatures and Characters” entry wall painted by artist Solomon Enos
HiSAM’s current artist in residence, Solomon Enos, painted the entry wall for the exhibit using a stream-of-consciousness approach and bold graphic style as a personal challenge. It is a striking contrast to the three artworks by Enos currently on display in the ʻEwa gallery (“Future Kiʻi”, “Living Landscape 2”, and “Living Landscape 3”), which have deep Pacific Island Futurism narratives and fine details.

SFCA Call for Artists: Public Art Request for Qualifications
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) has posted a Request for Qualifications on CallFor Entry (CaFE) for the SFCA Art in Public Places Program. The program is seeking qualifications from individual artists for artwork to be commissioned for various locations statewide. Sites for art may include opportunities for three-dimensional freestanding sculpture, two-dimensional images translated into durable materials, and large painted murals.

Through this call the SFCA intends to establish a qualified pool ofprofessional artists for consideration. Applications will only be accepted online through CallForEntry.org (2023 APP Hawaiʻi Request for Qualifications). You must be registered on CaFE before you can log in and apply for a call for entry.

Art Bento program welcomes 2,000 students to State Art Museum
SFCA Museum Education Coordinator Shirley Lam reports that for Art Bento School Year 2023-24, SFCA will welcome 10 schools with 92 classes (about 2,000 students) to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Art Bento students use the museum as a learning laboratory: works of art on display in the museum galleries are used as a catalyst for inquiry-based student learning in literacy, visual and performing arts. SFCA Artists in the Schools Spotlight: 145 Konawaena High School students practice personal expression, acceptance, and respect through artist residency program

Excerpt from a letter included in the end of year report: “. . . Given our location and access, many South Kona students do not have many extended learning and experiential opportunities, whether attending camps and classes of having consistent, meaningful interactions with our incredible community artists. This grant continues to afford our students those extended opportunities. In addition to proving instruction on fine arts standards, it provides/provided classroom teachers with a hands-on mentor to better teach the arts in their curriculum and supports students’ emotional well-being . . . I would like to add that our “artist in the school,” Ellen Crocker, has been an excellent teacher and mentor . . . [she] ensures a focus on social-emotional learning (a primary focus for Konawaena High) by giving students opportunities to practice personal expression, acceptance, and respect. Thank you again to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the State of Hawaiʻi Legislature, funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the private matching funds from the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation. Konawaena High thanks all of you for selecting us as a recipient. We are hopeful that this incredible partnership will continue into the next school year and into the future! •Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts (MOCA) Call for 2024 Exhibition Proposals MOCA manages civic spaces inside Honolulu Hale such as the courtyard and Lane Gallery. These spaces are used to showcase the talents of visual artists and showcase the work of non-profit organizations and schools from our diverse community. Partnerships with community organizations have enabled MOCA to grace the halls of City buildings with a wide range of artwork displayed monthly. All exhibits are free and open to the public. •Kahilu Exhibits (Kahilu Theatre, Waimea, Hawaiʻi Island) seeking exhibit proposals for 2024 calendar year. Art in Public Places Artwork Spotlight: “Noho (stay, ʻIʻiwi)” and “Noho (stay, Palila)” by Melissa Chimera
Museum visitors at July’s First Friday event explored the new “Fear of the Unknown” exhibit. In this photo, visitors are viewing “Noho (stay, ʻI‘iwi)” and “Noho (stay, Palila)”, oil paintings by Melissa Chimera. The paintings include photo transfers on silk, stitched to the surface of the paintings and are from the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection. The paintings were purchased from the Kahilu Theatre 5th Annual Juried Exhibition (Kamuela, Hawaiʻi Island).

Influenced by her background in nature conservation, much of Melissa Chimera’s artwork investigates species extinction, globalization, and human migration. For “Noho (stay, ʻI‘iwi)” and “Noho (stay, Palila)” she juxtaposes the lush, layered painted surfaces, reminiscent of decorative textile patterns, with the images of endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers, ʻI‘iwi and Palila. In addition to these birds are photos of ghost-like children transferred onto silk and stitched onto the canvas, as well as a lion with a branch in his mouth. The viewer is left with the delight of visual pleasure contrasted with a sense of uncertainty and trepidation. Chimera states, “This series is a call out to us, to humanity and to our birds – to stay with us a bit longer.”

After the exhibit, these prints will be eligible for placement in hundreds of state government sites across Hawaiʻi.

•Bishop Museum “Ola Ka No’eau: Excellence in Hawaiian Artistry” exhibit features artwork from 13 notable Hawaiian artists. Public programming includes a series of Living Culture workshops by some of the featured artists. August 12 and 13, Lei Hulu Kāmoe with Kawika Lum-Nelmeida. August 13, Kōkō Pūʻalu with ʻUmi Kai. Eight artworks approved for purchase for SFCA Art in Public Places Collection

Upcoming 2023 Meeting Schedule

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
