Filipino Veterans of WWII monument dedicated at the Waipahu Public Library, 2023 Poetry Out Loud Hawaiʻi State Champion announced, arts education programming for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools, grants, opportunities, calls for artists and more!

Filipino Veterans Honored
A dedication ceremony was held on Friday, February 24, 2023 for the "Filipino Veterans of WWII Monument" at the Waipahu Public Library. This is a commissioned work of art project set in motion by the 2017 Hawaiʻi State Legislature through HB 942, Relating to Filipino veterans, appropriating funds for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to commission a permanent monument to show Hawai‘i’s gratitude to Filipino veterans, provide a visual reminder of these Filipino veterans’ unique place in American and global history, and to educate the public on the role that minorities played in the outcome of World War II. Kapa Maker Roen Hufford Honored by National Endowment for the Arts
Roen Hufford, Kapa Maker from Waimea, Hawaiʻi, has been announced as one of the 2023 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) National Heritage Fellows. Hufford carries on the labor-intensive traditional art of ka hana kapa (making barkcloth) with designs inspired by the richness of her Hawaiian environment and is a leading figure in the reclaiming of this nearly lost art. Three kapa pieces by Roen Hufford (“Alaea”, “Ka Papa Honua (strata of earth)”, and “Piʻi Ka Mauna”) are on display in the “Accession: recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection” exhibit at the State Art Museum through the end of this year. Admission is free. The SFCA Art in Public Places Collection currently has six kapa pieces made by Hufford.

2023 Poetry out Loud Hawaiʻi State Champion
Irene Zhong is the 2023 Poetry Out Loud Hawaiʻi State Champion! 12 high school students representing Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island participated in the state finals, which took place at Tenney Theatre on
Sunday, February 26, 2023.

The event, which was held in-person for the first time since 2020, was hosted by Ben Gutierrez and featured an appearance by Brandy Nālani McDougall, the current Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate. Guest judges included Laurel Nakanishi, Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Mark Branner, and Sean-Joseph Choo.

Irene will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Semi-Finals in Washington, DC. All 55 state and jurisdictional champions will compete in the national semifinals on Tuesday, May 9, from 4:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time (9:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m. Eastern Time), with the top nine students advancing to the finals on Wednesday, May 10, from 2:00 - 4:15 p.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time (7:00 to 9:15 p.m. Eastern Time). Both days are free and open to the public and will be available through a one-time-only webcast at arts.gov.

2023 Hawaiʻi State Legislature Updates

Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace to receive $19,500,000

Governor Josh Green has authorized $17,500,000 for Bishop Museum and $2,000,000 for the Friends of Iolani Palace through the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. The funding was a legislative line item in the SFCA's 2022 fiscal budget but was not released during the previous administration. The funding will support the two institutions operations and construction projects.

On Tuesday February 14, The Senate Committee on Transportation, Culture and the Arts and the Senate Committee on Government Operations heard a slate of bills relating to the SFCA (see the full list on the legislature website: capitol.hawaii.gov/sessions/session2023/hearingnotices/HEARING_TCA_02-14-23_.HTM).

The focus of attention was on SB119, Relating to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts; Performing Arts; Works of Art Special Fund. The bill proposed to reduce Works of Art funding from construction by 50% and eliminate funding from renovations which account for an estimated 58% of revenues resulting in a devastating 75% reduction of funding. Citing the “overwhelming testimony in opposition” by over 90 arts supporting testifiers, committee Chair Chris Lee moved to defer the measure. HAA has also been sending out Action Alerts via email. The HAA is a statewide private nonprofit that champions all arts and is an Arts First Partner and member of the State Arts Advocacy Network. HAA is the State Captain for the national arts advocacy organization Americans for the Arts.

This position plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs all administrative staff services, advises and assists the Executive Director in internal management, fiscal and personnel staff functions; and performs other duties as required. Please note that this is not a secretarial, clerical, or office support position.
This is a full-time, temporary position with the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA). The SFCA is a division of the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Accounting and General Services and is the state government arts agency. Art Bento School Year 2023-2024 Applications Due March 17

Artists in the Schools 2023-2024 Information Sessions
An Artists in the Schools information session is being held online March 9, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. This information sessions is for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools interested in applying. Register on Zoom: AITS Information Sessions.

The SFCA Artists in the Schools program for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools brings qualified, vetted teaching artists from the SFCA’s Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) Roster into grades PreK-12 classrooms to provide engaging, creative, and fun learning experiences. The teaching artists connect their lessons to the National Core Arts Standards, and often integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas and/or HĀ principles. Mānoa Heritage Center Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke Workshops
Mānoa Heritage Center is a Biennium Grants FY2023 grantee, and the grant supports their Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke workshops. Maui Arts and Cultural Center performance by kumu hula Aulii Mitchell and members of Hālau ʻo Kahiwahiwa

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) featured a performance by kumu hula Aulii Mitchell and members of Hālau ʻo Kahiwahiwa in February, showcasing hula kiʻi, a critically endangered Hawaiian practice of the ritual dance of carved puppetry images. The event concluded with a private walkthrough of the ʻIke Kanaka exhibit in the Schaefer International Gallery. The MACC receives funding from the SFCA to support programming.

•Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts (MOCA) Call for Exhibition Proposals – MOCA is accepting proposals for the 2023 exhibit calendars. MOCA manages civic spaces inside Honolulu Hale such as the courtyard and Lane Gallery. These spaces are used to showcase the talents of visual artists and showcase the work of non-profit organizations and schools from our diverse community. Partnerships with community organizations have enabled MOCA to grace the halls of City buildings with a wide range of artwork displayed on a monthly basis. Board of Commissioners approves 12 artworks, 4 exhibit visits
The SFCA Board of Commissioners approved 12 artworks and 4 exhibit visits at the January 31 board meeting. Artwork purchases are from exhibits on Maui, Kauaʻi, and Oʻahu. Exhibit visits are for exhibits on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu.

3 artworks nominated at Hui Noʻeau exhibit
Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs) nominated 3 artworks from the Hui Noʻeau 2023 Annual Juried Exhibition for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection. These artworks will be presented to the SFCA Board of Commissioners for purchase approval at a future meeting.

Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs) Recent and Upcoming Exhibit Visits
Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. Artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection are selected via an AASC from juried or curated exhibits statewide. An AASC visit must be requested by the exhibition organizers and approved by the SFCA Board of Commissioners. An AASC Request Application can be submitted online at Hawaii.GoSmart.org/active_programs at least 4 months prior to the opening reception of the exhibition.

“Under the Blue” Community Arts Project opens March 3
This community art installation in the first phase of an immersive art experience that explores the various zones of the ocean. Inspired by phytoplankton, Native Hawaiian artists Solomon Enos encourages people of all ages to make dots and dashes on the wall, which will turn into the backdrop of an immersive ocean performance venue for young people with developmental disabilities and disorders.
This project is a partnership of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, the Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth. “Under the Blue” opens Friday, March 3 – come and experience it during First Friday!

2023 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards Exhibition opens Saturday, March 11, 2023. This year, the annual student art exhibition featuring Hawaiʻi’s top high school artists will be exhibited in the spacious ʻEwa Gallery at HiSAM. Over 250 works of art created by students statewide attending public, charter, private and home school will be on display.

•ʻIke Kanaka Exhibit at Maui Arts and Cultural Center, through March 18, 2023 This invitational exhibit features work by ten contemporary Kanaka ʻŌiwi artists, giving voice and cultural context to ancestral ties and relationships. Participating artists: Bernice Akamine, Kalaʻi Blakemore, Hoaka Delos Reyes, Solomon Enos, Pōhaku Kahoʻohanohano, Lehuauakea, Kawika Lum-Nelmida, Meleanna Aluli Meyer, Auliʻi Mitchell, Cory Kamehanaokalā Holt Taum. Art crafted by 17 UH alumni to be featured at state museum
“A new exhibit showcasing an array of hand-selected contemporary works from 38 artists across the pae ʻāina (Hawaiian archipelago) will open at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HISAM) on February 10. Honolulu Magazine February 28, 2023 Accessions Exhibit Opens at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum “For more than 50 years, the State of Hawai‘i has been the biggest art collector in town. The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts frequently visits curated and juried exhibitions at galleries, museums, and art centers across the islands to hunt and gather exceptional works of contemporary art. These become added to the Art in Public Places collection where the works are displayed in over 640 locations statewide including schools, libraries, airports, the State Capitol, and Hawai‘i State Art Museum, giving the public access to inspiring art. Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.
Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.

Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
