Website, survey launched for Kailua Beach Park boat ramp improvement project

Project information and survey available at

www.kailuaboatramp.com

O‘AHU -- Following emergency repairs to the boat ramp on the Lanikai-end (south-side) of Kailua Beach Park, the City is moving forward with community outreach to gauge public sentiment regarding long-term improvements to this recreational ocean facility.

From now until March 31, 2023, a survey will be open to gather public input on the proposed improvement project. The survey and additional project details, including visuals of the proposed ramp improvements, can be accessed by visiting: www.kailuaboatramp.com

The survey will also be available at an Open House Event scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kailua District Park's Multi-Purpose Room.

Prior to the development of this project design, the City held stakeholder meetings with ramp users, local canoe clubs, community members, and the Kailua Neighborhood Board beginning Oct. 2022. During these meetings, the preliminary stakeholder response focused on replacing the boat ramp to accommodate its current usage, while maintaining its existing character and the supporting parking.

Since its construction in 1962, the ramp has been repaired multiple times, and again needs repair due to damage from wave action and erosion. Most recently, in summer 2021, emergency repairs were conducted to the boat ramp, including filling holes in the ramp and shoring-up various voids. Before that effort, the ramp was closed in early February 2021 due to worsening conditions.

This popular boat ramp is the only manmade watercraft launch facility managed and maintained by the City and County of Honolulu, and is a valuable resource for Windward ocean-goers.

We appreciate park and boat ramp users for taking the time to share their mana‘o with the City.
