Parking lot repaving projects continue to improve parks across O‘ahu

Most renovation efforts will require approximately one-week closure of the parking lot

O‘AHU -- The island-wide effort to renovate parking lots at City parks across O‘ahu continues with repaving efforts scheduled for February and March.

From the Leeward Coast to the Windward Side and in town, the following parks are scheduled for the contracted repaving efforts:

  • Asing Community Park ($147,830)
  • Ulehawa Beach Park (lot near Hakimo Road, $66,478)
  • Waimānalo Beach Park (two lots, $207,892)
  • Kawainui Model Airplane Field ($175,252)
  • Neal S. Blaisdell Park ($317,000)

Most of these paving efforts will require about a one-week closure of the parking lots during the renovations. For instance, Asing Community Park's lot is scheduled to be closed from Feb 13 -- Feb. 20, while the Neal S. Blaisdell Park lot will require an approximately three-week closure in March due to more extensive work with the traffic lights and tree trimming.

The majority of the funds for these repaving efforts were provided thanks to appropriations from the area's City Councilmember, including from councilmembers Esther Kia‘āina and Augie Tulba. Councilmember Andria Tupola additionally added $750,000 for a complimentary parking lot project at Kea‘au Beach Park to install vehicular barriers along the interior park road and lot, which was repaved in Nov. 2021.

Additional repaving efforts are being planned later in the year for Lili‘uokalani Botanical Garden and two lots at Kailua District Park.

Since September 2021, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Design and Construction have contracted approximately $3.5 million in repaving efforts at 20 park and garden locations across O‘ahu. Those also include:

Mahalo to the regular park users for their patience and understanding while these parking facilities are closed for these renovation projects.
