HONOLULU – On Saturday, August 14, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i (CCCH) will hold a clean-up day in Chinatown, with support from the Honolulu Mayor’s Office and the Department of Facility Maintenance’s Storm Water Quality Division (SWQ) and Division of Road Maintenance (DRM). The project will take place in the areas between Nimitz Highway, River Street, South Beretania Street, and Bethel Street.

Members of the CCCH, along with other organizations and individuals, will pick-up litter along the city’s sidewalks and roads, and paint over graffiti on traffic control boxes.  SWQ will assist with the litter pick-up, while DRM’s Clean Team and Mālama O Ka ‘Āina community volunteer program will assist with power washing select sidewalks and graffiti removal, respectively.

The city is grateful to CCCH for rallying the community to help rejuvenate the historic Chinatown area, an important hub for culture, arts, and business activity in Honolulu.

Beautification efforts will continue beyond this Saturday’s clean-up. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is scheduled to plant 44 street trees in mid-September throughout Chinatown, in addition to planting two trees in the empty planters on Fort Street Mall later this month. DPR is also poised to repair and fill five tree wells and six undersized tree wells on Sun Yat Sen Mall.
