Project to improve accessibility, recreation building, and gymnasium at Pālolo Valley District Park

Work expected to be completed by the end of 2021, with closure of park facilities necessary

O‘AHU -- A Capital Improvement Project to provide accessibility and amenity improvements at Pālolo Valley District Park is beginning this week.

The project largely involves extensive work to improve accessibility for the park through demolition, grading, paving and renovation of park walkways. The scope of the project also includes:

  • Renovations to the recreation building & gymnasium bathrooms
  • Repurposing the gymnasium's kitchenette into game room storage
  • Expanding and improving staff office space
  • Replacing the gymnasium ADA lift and entryway
  • Painting and anti-graffiti coatings
  • Additional electrical work

The work will begin with exterior work, and will require the periodic closure of several of the park's facilities, including the gymnasium, pool, recreation building and surrounding amenities such as the parking lots. The City is coordinating with the contractor to minimize the closure of these facilities for public use.

The project is expected to be completely finished before the end of the year.

The nearly $2.238 million contract for construction was awarded to Contech Engineering, Inc. Approximately 71% of the construction cost is being funded through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The CDBG Program is a federally-funded initiative to provide annual grants principally for the improvement of communities in low to moderate income areas.
