Hawaiʻi State Legislature

This year the state legislature’s Art at the Capitol event will include two features: an online series of “What’s on My Wall” interviews with legislators and artists talking about the value of the arts, and a nightly projection on the exterior of the Capitol construction barrier on April 14, 15, 16. Art at the Capitol is an annual event organized by the SFCA and Senator Brian Taniguchi, chair of the committee on Labor, Culture and the Arts. This annual event highlights works of art in the Hawaiʻi State Capitol building.
American Rescue Plan: Arts and Culture
NEA: The American Rescue Plan and the Arts and Creative Industries
The American Rescue Plan (ARP) includes $135 million for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support organizations and jobs in the arts sector that have been impacted by the pandemic. The NEA plans to release information on funding eligibility guidelines and how to apply by late April. Get more information on the NEA website: NEA American Rescue Plan
NEA: The Art of Re-Opening Webinar Recording
This webinar was based in part on the NEA’s report The Art of Reopening: A Guide to Current Practices Among Arts Organizations During COVID-19 that was published in January 2021. The report examines reopening practices of organizations that resumed in-person programming in 2020 and presents promising tactics and nine case studies. SBA Shuttered Venue Operators Grant Update
The US Small Business Association (SBA) has launched a notification system for the forthcoming Shuttered Venue Operators Grant portal, which is scheduled to open on Thursday, April 8. Eligible venues can prepare by:
•Securing a DUNS number and registering with SAM.gov
•Gathering the materials on the latest application checklist
•Sign up to be notified when the portal opens

2021 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards Exhibit

VIDEO: Interviews with students Morgan Pierpont, Phoenix Maimiti Valentine, and Luna Suzuki, Farrington High School Photography Teacher Aljon Tacata, SFCA Art in Public Places Program Manager and HiSAM Director Karen Ewald, and gallery views of the 2021 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM). The exhibit is open through Friday, April 16, 2021 (please note that the museum is closed Friday April 2 for the Good Friday holiday). Admission is free.

The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum is a part of the SFCA Art in Public Places Program. “Creating art does more than just give the viewer something interesting to look at,” says Jonathan Johnson, SFCA Executive Director. “Engagement in the artistic process fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, often referred to as ‘21st century skills.’ Students who create art are expressing themselves and gaining an understanding of who they truly are. Having the Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum helps the SFCA carry out its mission to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawaiʻi.”

2021 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi Winners
Judging for the 2021 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi competition for Hawaiʻi students grades K-6 has been completed! 96 winning artworks were selected from 392 entries, and will be on display in the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (May 14 – June 25, 2021) and high-quality replicas of the artworks will be displayed at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center April 2021 – March 2022.
2021 Poetry Out Loud Hawaiʻi State Champion
Congratulations Taylor!
SFCA and Poetry Out Loud state coordinator Honolulu Theatre for Youth have announced that Taylor Cozloff is the 2021 Hawaiʻi Poetry Out Loud champion. Ms. Cozloff represented Kamehameha Schools Kāpalama in Honolulu and won over a competitive field of eight students representing high schools on Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. Due to the pandemic, the Hawaiʻi finals were held as a video submission contest in early March.

"Poetry has been one of my best friends for so much of my life," shared Taylor Cozloff after winning. "Whether it is reading it, writing it, or reciting it, poetry has been a way for me to make sense of the world. I am so grateful for Poetry Out Loud because it has allowed me to grow closer to poetry and understand it better." Taylor is a high school senior and participated in Poetry Out Loud for the last three years. She ranked 2nd in the state competition both years before winning the 2021 title.
Artists in the Schools
The Artists In the Schools Applications are currently open for the 2021-2022 school year. School educators and administrators from all state of Hawaiʻi public and public charter schools are eligible to apply in partnership with a Teaching Artist from the SFCA Artistic Teaching Partners Roster.

SFCA Grantee Spotlight

Kumulaʻau Sing
Folk & Traditional Arts grant alumn Kumulaʻau Sing is featured in the Winter 2021 issue of Imua magazine (published for Kamehameha Schools).“His knowledge of and passion for the Native Hawaiian arts of sculpting wooden figures and implements, and weaving a multitude of baskets and helmets is present in every work of art he and his students produce through painstaking dedication and attention to detail. Sing, a Kamehameha Schools cultural specialist based at the Ka‘iwakīloumokuHawaiian Cultural Center at KS Kapālama, is a traditional mixed-media artist and Hawaiian cultural practitioner who has created a community of ‘ie‘ie (woody climbing vine) basketry weavers who are, piece by piece, revitalizing this important practice.” The magazine can be read online:https://www.ksbe.edu/imua/archives/.

The SFCA seeks arts professionals from a broad range of artistic and cultural viewpoints as volunteers to review applications for grant funding. WESTAF Women’s Suffrage Mural Project
To mark the centennial of the landmark legislation that granted women the right to vote, WESTAF (Western States Arts Federation) will commission the creation of a mural related to Women’s Suffrage in a highly trafficked site in Denver's Montbello neighborhood. This call is limited to artists that reside within the 13-state WESTAF region that includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaiʻi, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming and reside within 350 miles from Denver, CO. WESTAF will prioritize submissions from artists/artist groups that identify as being from historically marginalized communities, particularly those with a knowledge of the Montbello community and who identify as female. This project was made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Federal Womenʻs Suffrage Centennial Commission. Apply on Call for Entry. Deadline April 14, 2021

Technical Assistance for Nonprofits Seeking Grants
The Hawaiʻi Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO) is launching a new technical assistance service for nonprofits who are pursuing (or planning to pursue) a federal grant. This pilot program is intended to test an approach to building capacity and harnessing more federal resources for Hawaiʻi nonprofits. HANO is especially interested in projects that encourage collaboration across sectors, and inspire diversity, equity and inclusion. Participating organizations will receive free technical assistance services that include federal grants coaching, application review, or copy editing services, as well as referrals. TourWest Grant Program
TourWest is a competitive grant program, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, that provides subsidies to arts and community organizations for the presentation of touring performers and literary artists within the 13-state WESTAF region. For the 2021-2022 cycle, projects must take place between September 1, 2021 and August 31, 2022 and must have one public performance and one educational outreach activity. A one time exception will be available for the 2021-2022 cycle to applicants experiencing difficulties booking out-of-state artists due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Deadline: April 15, 2021. Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA has conducted 20 AASC visits during the pandemic so far.

•The Center for Oral History at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa, Department of Ethnic Studies, supported by a grant from the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, partners with Hawaiʻi Public Radio (HPR) to share voices and stories from Hawaiʻi’s past. Hawaii State Art Museum

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai'i artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural legacy of Hawai'i.
