SFCA Telework Update

Small Business and Entertainment Venue COVID-19 Relief
In December, Congress passed a year-end government funding bill that includes $900 billion in COVID relief. More than $300 billion of the COVID relief spending is dedicated to small business assistance, including an extension of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a new Small Business Administration (SBA) grant program for live entertainment venues and museums, and new funding for Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) emergency grants in low-income communities. Senator Brian Schatz has released a new COVID-19 Federal Resource Guide to help Hawaiʻi small businesses access new funding programs. Call for Student Artists: 2021 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi

Young Artists of Hawaiʻi
Students and educators: submissions are open for the 2021 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi competition! Public, charter, private, or home-school Hawaiʻi students enrolled in grades K-6 are eligible to participate.

•Final day to submit artwork is Friday, January 25, 2021.
•Theme: "My Culture, My Family, and Me"
•Exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum May 14 - June 25, 2021.
•Replica of the exhibit on display at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center May 2021 - March 2022.

Young Artists of Hawaiʻi is an annual student art competition and exhibition. Presented by the State Foundation on culture and the Arts and the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, this program recognizes creative excellence among Hawaiʻi’s public and private school students, Kindergarten through sixth grade. A panel of judges select 96 works for the exhibition, which is presented at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum.

Artists in the Schools Applications

Applications for the Artists in the Schools (AITS) arts residency grants will open later this month. We will announce when the applications are open in a separate email. School educators and administrators from all state of Hawaiʻi public and charter schools are eligible to apply in partnership with a Teaching Artist from the SFCA Artistic Teaching Partners Roster. Art Bento Applications Open January 15

Art Bento at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM) is a museum education program serving Oʻahu public and charter schools grades 2-6. The program actively engages students and teachers through activities connected to current arts standards and ELA Common Core standards. There is no cost to schools to participate in the program, and funds for bus transportation are provided.

Poetry Out Loud

The Hawaiʻi State Finals and National Finals for the 2021 Poetry Out Loud recitation contest will be held virtually.
Poetry Out Loud is open to all students in grades 9 – 12, and is designed to fit into a teacher’s busy schedule. Teachers are provided with free curriculum materials, designed to meet national standards and augment their regular curriculum with poetry recitation and competition.

The Biennium Grants program is open to eligible nonprofit organizations throughout the state of Hawaiʻi and supports projects that align with SFCA’s Strategic Priorities: Culture, Engagement, Education, the Arts.

Grant Review Panelist Applications Open

The SFCA’s grant programs are seeking Grant Review Panelists to review applications for grant funding. Do you know arts/culture professionals who may be interested in volunteering their time and expertise?
At the SFCA, we view art and cultural engagement as critical to the educational, economic, and social well-being of individuals, communities, and the state of Hawaiʻi. Panels are selected per Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules, Chapter 92, and composed of arts professionals who represent a broad range of artistic and cultural viewpoints to review applications for grant funding. An arts professional is qualified by their activities, training, skills, and/ or experience in one or more forms. All panel members serve without compensation. National Endowment for the Arts 2021 Grants for Arts Projects
Guidelines and application materials for Grants for Arts Projects funding are now available on the National Endowment for the Arts' new website (www.arts.gov). Application deadlines are February 11 and July 8, 2021 for projects taking place beginning in 2022.

SFCA Grantee Spotlight
SFCA supports community projects across the state through grants to nonprofit organizations in Hawaiʻi.

Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning (HIMELE)

In response to COVID-19, HIMELE pivoted their Biennium Grants supported project from the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festivals to the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase with monthly live performances on Facebook. The performances are held on last Saturday of each month through June 2021. The December 19 performance was livestreamed and the recording is available at Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase.
Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY)
Honolulu Theatre for Youth’s “The HI Way” program, launched in response to pandemic restrictions, is featured in the National Endowment for the Arts’ most recent issue of American Artscapes Magazine. “To suddenly create a video where you’re getting no response, where you’re talking to a camera, was a journey of learning,” said Director of Drama Education Dan Kelin, who noted that while it’s been a challenge to make the switch to virtual given his staff’s lack of filming and editing experience, it has also been rewarding. “This was one of the things that I really liked about pivoting to digital work. Ballet Hawaii and Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra
Ballet Hawaii and Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra presented the annual Nutcracker Ballet performance as a television broadcast that aired on December 19th, 25th, and 26th. Set in the 1858 Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, the production included costume design by costume designer Christine Darch, with local fashion designers Kini Zamora and Anne Namba.

Hawaiʻi State Legislature Committee on Labor, Culture and the Arts (LCA)
Informational Briefing. Thursday, December 3, 10:00 a.m. Hosted by Senator Brian Taniguchi, Chair of the Senate Committee on Labor, Culture and the Arts (LCA). The purpose of the informational briefing was to receive a presentation from creative sector leaders in Hawai‘i about the importance of the creative economy to the welfare of the State of Hawai‘i. House Committee on Culture, Arts and International Affairs Rep. Cedric Gates was also in attendance as well as LCA members Sen. Stanley Chang, Sen. Kurt Fevella, Sen. Panel Meeting: SFCA Artistic Teaching Partners Roster
In December, the SFCA convened a panel of highly qualified arts educators to begin the process of onboarding new Teaching Artists onto the SFCA Artistic Teaching Partner Roster (https://sfca.hawaii.gov/arts-education-programs/artists-in-the-schools/artistic-teaching-partners-roster/). The SFCA is looking forward to diversifying the Roster over the next few years by bringing on artists of various artistic discipline, age, ethnicity, ability, and experience in working with different populations. SFCA arts education programs draw on this roster, including the statewide Artists in the Schools (AITS) program and the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum’s Art Bento arts education program.

Recent and Upcoming Exhibit Visits
SFCA artwork purchases are recommended by an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) that have been invited to view a juried or curated art exhibit in the state of Hawaiʻi. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

•Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM): The HiSAM Gift Shop, operated by the Friends of HiSAM volunteer group, is displaying new work by Herman Piʻikea Clark, Kānaka Maoli artist, educator, and business owner. Friends of HiSAM are also displaying artworks in the museum café, by emerging Kānaka Maoli artists Cory Kamehanaokalā Holt Taum, Nanea Lum, and Nālamakūkapō Ahsing. Artworks are available for sale. •Hawaiʻi Contemporary Art Summit: February 10-13, 2021. A multi-day event that brings together renowned keynote speakers, artists, curators, and thinkers from Hawai‘i and around the world for educational programming focused on art and ideas. A thematic precursor to the Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 (HT22), Art Summit 2021 is a series of insightful and compelling talks, performances, film screenings, and workshops that situates Hawai‘i at the center of high-caliber, global discourse around contemporary art and ideas to local and international audiences. This summit is sponsored in part by funding from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. This program is free to the public. HiSAM Social Media
The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum has a new social media management contractor. Makauila, Inc. is a Hawaiʻi-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that, through its DBA (“doing business as”) ʻŌiwiTV, has over 10 years of experience in all stages of production from concept development to filming to post-production and distribution for feature-length documentaries, episodic series, marketing campaigns, and live-streaming.
ʻŌiwi TV served as the official media partner of the 3-year Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, providing documentation and communications services on board the traditional Polynesian sailing vessel Hōkūleʻa and in several dozen domestic and international locations. ʻŌiwi TV also managed the various media distribution and engagement venues for the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS), namely Hokulea.com, as well as the organization’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.
HiSAM YouTube
A new YouTube channel has been created to share museum events online. The museum will be adding HiSAM From Home videos to the new YouTube channel as well. Watch online: HiSAM YouTube. Some HiSAM From Home videos with closed captions can also be viewed on the SFCA Vimeo channel.

Choreographed by Camille Monson, excerpts from "Debris" explores the attraction and the trauma that plastic products bring to the earth, animals, and our bodies. "Debris" is one of five performances in "Transference" – a contemporary modern dance performance that explores the need to shift, transfer and respond in an ever-changing world. These dance performances were filmed in the museum grounds and galleries, with dancers responding to artwork from the Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. A collaboration between Convergence Dance Theatre, Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

“Mysterious monolith spotted on Mānoa campus”
"To inspire future generations, “Krypton” was restored in 2019 by the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture & the Arts. A sound system that was part of the monolith when it was dedicated in 1973 was turned off a year later. The restoration included a redesign of the system, and test runs have already been used for wave demonstrations during physics department open houses. A more permanent sound installation is in progress."

Unless otherwise specified, the public is invited to attend SFCA Standing Committee and Commission Meetings. Meetings and agendas are posted just prior to the meetings on the State of Hawai‘i Calendar of Events. Select “State Foundation on Culture and the Arts” from the search menu.

In order to comply with the Sunshine Law and social distancing requirements, notice of meetings will be posted on the State of Hawaiʻi Calendar of Events seven days prior to the meeting, submission of written testimony on agendized items will be accepted and minutes of meetings will be available within 40 days after the meeting.

For doing business with the state as a contractor, the State of Hawaii eProcurement (HiePro) is a system for issuing solicitations, receiving responses, and issuing notices of award. Solicitations and awards are posted and searchable. State Foundation on Culture and the Arts solicitations have included graphic design services, printing services, custom framing, artwork conservation and restoration.To find SFCA solicitations, search under Department: Accounting and General Services (the SFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services).

Help the SFCA Select Artwork
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees. The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project, including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of the artist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and make recommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints the committee members for each exhibit visit — generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and Visual Arts Consultants.
