  • Self-Service Kiosk For Renewing Vehicle Registrations Unveiled At Sack N Save

Self-service kiosk for renewing vehicle registrations unveiled at Sack n Save

HONOLULU – Residents in the Halawa and Salt Lake areas became the latest to turn renewing a vehicle registration into a convenient part of a visit to the supermarket.

A DMV Now kiosk has been installed inside the Sack n Save grocery store at Stadium Marketplace, bringing to seven the total number of these free-standing terminals on Oahu that operate much like ATMs.

The other six kiosks are deployed at select Safeway stores across the island and the Foodland supermarket at the Waipio Shopping Center.

These self-service kiosks are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to shorten lines at satellite city halls and offer convenient transactions for basic government services. The machines have processed and printed, in a matter of minutes, more than 127,000 vehicle registrations and emblems since their debut on Oahu in February 2019. Most are open at least until midnight, if not 24/7.

“Providing basic government services outside of the normal practice is no longer a nice-to-have, but a must-have in the middle of a pandemic,” said Sheri Kajiwara, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services. “The self-service retail technology has allowed us to make renewing a motor vehicle registration more accessible and functional outside of normal in-person visits.”

The kiosks accept registration renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date. Late registrations are assessed a standard $16 fee. Safety checks are not needed to register a vehicle through Nov. 30, 2020.

The vendor’s $3 convenience fee is assessed to transactions at the kiosks. It is on top of the 2.5 percent fee on credit and debit cards assessed by financial institutions when used at any of the kiosks.

Residents can also renew a vehicle registration online or by mail, but these options are unable to calculate any late fees and require a 10-to 15-day wait to receive the card and emblem by mail.
