Calls for Artists
Call for Artists: APP COVID-19

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Art in Public Places Program has a call for artists, requesting submissions for artwork inspired by or created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of the pandemic on life in Hawaiʻi. Artworks will be considered by a committee for the Art in Public Places Collection, which is displayed in sites across the state of Hawaiʻi, including the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum in Honolulu.

Call for Artists: ATP Teaching Artist Roster

Applications now open for the Artistic Teaching Partner Roster of Teaching Artists. The roster is an adjudicated directory of Hawaiʻi professional teaching artists qualified to conduct in-depth, standards-based fine arts and arts integration residencies in educational settings and to present professional development workshops for teachers. SFCA draws from this roster for educational programs with public and charter schools in the state of Hawaiʻi.

Call for Artists: 2021 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Students and educators: submissions are open for the 2021 Scholastic Student Art and Writing Awards competition! Read the tips for students and educators, including feedback from judges and preparing for the digital submissions process: Get Ready for the 2021 Awards. Public, private, or home-school students in the U.S., Canada, or American schools in the rest of the world enrolled in grades 7-12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate. Final day to submit artwork is Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is the Hawaiʻi regional Affiliate Partner for the Scholastic Student Art and Writing Awards. SFCA participates in the student art portion of the competition, and all entry fees for Hawaiʻi students associated with the competition are covered by the SFCA.

Hawaiʻi State Art Museum Reopens October 12 with new exhibit "For Walls"

Visual Arts Consultant Jennifer Owen reviews “Dwell #4” which will make its SFCA debut in the exhibition “For Walls.”  The sculpture, made of basswood, found suitcase and electrical by Ted Lott was recently acquired from the Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts & Cultural Center exhibition titled, "The Woodworker's Journey:  Concept to Creation" which ran January 7 - February 23, 2020. Visual Arts Consultants volunteers nominate artworks for purchase consideration by the SFCA.
Staff is planning to reopen the museum to the public on Monday, October 12, with a new exhibit titled “For Walls” in the Turnaround Gallery.
 
The museum cafe, Artizen by MW, has closed permanently.

SFCA CARES Relief Fund Update
Invoices have been processed for 90% of the $427,500 CARES Act Relief funds the SFCA is responsible for. The final payment of the remaining 10% will be administered when we receive the Final Reports from the grantees. SFCA Grantee Spotlight
Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities:
The 2020 Hawaiʻi History Day program was held as a virtual event and is now available online. Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities has a virtual gallery walk of all of the student projects. Several of the Hawaiʻi projects received national awards. Student projects include documentary films, websites, exhibits and performances. History subjects span from Alexander the Great to Queen Kaahumanu to Oprah Winfrey; from "The Revitalization of Hawaiian Language in the Education System" to "The Role of Propaganda in Breaking Barriers". ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi has been incorporated as a presentational language since last year. View the projects online:

Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra launched “Sounds of Resilience”, performances by physically distanced orchestra ensembles streamed live from the Hawaii Theatre Center in September. The first performance, “Galaxy of Strings”, streamed on September 26. The second performance, “From Chaos to Calm”, streams on Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. For more information: https://www.myhso.org/

SFCA in the Community
Museums Roundtable Discussion with Congressman Ed Case
State Foundation on Culture and the Arts participated in a roundtable discussion in September. Congressman Ed Case convened Hawaiʻi museum and cultural institution leaders to hear their thoughts on the issues facing Hawaiʻi museums as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the steps museums have taken, and what federal assistance may be available. Congressman Case supports the continuation of direct federal economic relief, and his office will be providing a list of grant/funding opportunities applicable to Hawaiʻi museums and cultural institutions as well as assistance in navigating federal resources and programs.
 
Kauaʻi Community Arts Center
SFCA participated in a conversation about community partnerships and development work in Lihue, with Terry Liu, Addison Bulosan, Diana Singh, Carol Yotsuda and Christopher Sadler. The focus of the work is around the renovation of the Kress Building into a community arts center by Mark Gabbay, and community programming on Rice and Kress streets through a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
Our Town grant administered by the Hawaiʻi Arts Alliance.
 
Hawaiʻi Afterschool Alliance: Virtually Engaging Students Through the Arts
SFCA Arts Education Specialist Nikki Rosengren participated in an interactive webinar featuring guest facilitators from the Hawaiʻi Arts Alliance, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, and SFCA. SFCA artwork purchases are recommended by an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) that have been invited to view a juried or curated art exhibit in the state of Hawaiʻi. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM): The HiSAM Gift Shop, operated by the Friends of HiSAM volunteer group, is displaying new work by Herman Piʻikea Clark, Kānaka Maoli artist, educator, and business owner. Friends of HiSAM are also displaying artworks in the museum café, Artizen by MW, by emerging Kānaka Maoli artists Cory Kamehanaokalā Holt Taum, Nanea Lum, and Nālamakūkapō Ahsing. New Exhibit: “For Walls” This exhibition highlights sculptures created specifically for walls, using them both as a support and as a backdrop. Many of us, due to the COVID pandemic and quarantining, have become all too familiar with our own four walls. With that in mind, we invite you to explore a variety of unique and dynamic ways artists engage and enliven enclosed spaces. All artworks are from the Art in Public Places Collection of the SFCA.

Unless otherwise specified, the public is invited to attend SFCA Standing Committee and Commission Meetings. Meetings and agendas are posted just prior to the meetings on the
State of Hawai‘i Calendar of Events. Select “State Foundation on Culture and the Arts” from the search menu.

In order to comply with the Sunshine Law 
and social distancing requirements, notice of meetings will be posted on the State of Hawaiʻi Calendar of Events seven days prior to the meeting, submission of written testimony on agendized items will be accepted and minutes of meetings will be available within 40 days after the meeting.

eProcurement
For doing business with the state as a contractor, the State of Hawaii eProcurement (HiePro) is a system for issuing solicitations, receiving responses, and issuing notices of award. Solicitations and awards are posted and searchable. State Foundation on Culture and the Arts solicitations have included graphic design services, printing services, custom framing, artwork conservation and restoration.To find SFCA solicitations, search under Department: Accounting and General Services (the SFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services).

Get Involved: Volunteer Opportunities
Help the SFCA Select Artwork
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees. The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project, including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of the artist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and make recommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints the committee members for each exhibit visit — generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and Visual Arts Consultants.
