Message from the Executive Director
Aloha,

As Hawaii faces the effects of the public health crisis surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we recognize the culture and arts field is particularly vulnerable to the economic impact of the emergency.  We also know we are one of the most innovative sectors and we will find our way through this time. At the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, we will continue to support the arts infrastructure statewide through grants, initiatives and services.  Our goal is to ensure the safety of our staff and continue operations consistently.

State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) administrative offices are closed to the public, however, our work to promote, perpetuate and preserve culture and the arts in Hawai‘i will continue! SFCA staff are working remotely Monday through Friday during state business hours. Please contact staff by telephone or email (staff list on our website). If you aren’t sure who to contact, please call our main line, (808) 586-0300 and leave a voice message, or email HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. We are also posting updates and links on our social media: @Hawaii_SFCA on Facebook, @Hawaii_SFCA on Instagram, and @Hawaii_SFCA on Twitter.

In this issue of our email newsletter, read about Arts and Culture Information and Resources on our website, how nonprofit organizations can help Hawai‘i get funding for COVID-19 relief, our new Arts Education Resource page compiled by SFCA staff, arts support in the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and amendments we are making to grantee contracts to fund general operations.
Take care,
Jonathan Johnson
Executive Director
State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

COVID-19 Resources and Information for Artists and Arts/Culture Organizations

The SFCA COVID-19 Information and Resources page is a collection of resources that may be relevant to you and/or the artists, arts professionals, and organizations with whom you work. We will continue to update this page for as long as it may be useful.

Nonprofit Organizations: Help Hawai‘i Get Funding for COVID-19 Relief
The National Endowment for the Arts together with Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit for advancing the arts, have created a survey to assess the economic impact of COVID-19 on nonprofits arts organizations. We urge all Hawai‘i nonprofit arts organizations to participate, so the virus’ effect on our state’s arts infrastructure can be documented.

Your answers are critically important. They create the data-backed case for advocacy to include the arts in emergency relief funding that might be allocated at the federal or state levels.

Take the five-minute survey online at
AFTA COVID-19 Arts Impact Survey.

Arts Education Resource Page
A curated list, compiled by our SFCA staff, contains various arts experiences accessible online, for all ages and abilities. This list will be updated as more resources become available. Read more on our website: SFCA Arts Education Resource Page

One of the resources on our list is the Honolulu Theatre for Youth's “The HI Way: Bringing Theatre into Your Home” with new digital content for families and Children. The HI Way will bring the magic of their educational stage performances and the resident ensemble’s creative energy into a digital format for viewing at home on any device. The series will be broadcast locally on television as well as online. Learn more on their website: Honolulu Theatre for Youth

Arts Included in Federal Stimulus Bill
On Wednesday March 25, the U.S. Senate and Congress approved a $2.2 trillion emergency relief package, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, designed to support the U.S. economy and provide critical investment in resources to help hospitals contend with the COVID-19 outbreak. The $2 trillion emergency stimulus package included important provisions supporting the arts sector and creative workforce. The nation's arts and culture industry is experiencing devastating economic losses with closed venues and cancelled performances, exhibitions, and events as a result of the pandemic.

This vital piece of legislation includes direct support for both nonprofit cultural organizations and state and local arts and humanities agencies, as well as economic relief provisions for independent contractors, "gig economy" workers and artists, entrepreneurs, and small businesses working in the creative economy.

At this time, the amount that will be distributed to the State of Hawai‘i, when that funding will arrive, and any requirements are all unknown. The SFCA will provide updates as we learn more.

All Hawai‘i public and charter schools are eligible to apply.
