City taking further measures to mitigate spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

HONOLULU -- The City has recently taken additional measures to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), which on Wednesday, March 11, was designated by the World Health Organization as a pandemic.

The following actions have been taken to protect City workers and those they serve in the City and County of Honolulu:

  • On Friday, March 6, Mayor Kirk Caldwell delivered a memorandum to all City employees advising cancelation of all non-essential business travel to foreign countries that have been identified as "Warning - Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel - Widespread Community Transmission" countries by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).These countries are China, Iran, South Korea, Italy and other recently added European countries. If a City employee has traveled to one of these countries they are being asked to stay home for fourteen days after returning from travel, monitor their health, and practice social distancing.

  • On Wednesday, March 11, Mayor Caldwell issued a directive cancelling all non-essential business travel until further notice. This includes all travel to the neighbor islands and beyond Hawai‘i, as well as travel requests that have already been approved. All essential business travel requests or exceptions to this Mayor's Directive require approval from Managing Director Roy Amemiya, Jr.

Additionally, new procedures have been implemented to ensure cleanliness and safety of "high touch" areas in public facilities and on public transportation.

The City will continue to take further action to protect City workers and the people they serve in the days and weeks to come, which includes evaluating City functions and events.City officials are working closely with State officials to keep everyone in our island community safe during this Coronavirus outbreak.
