City’s 7th off-leash dog park opened at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park

HONOLULU – A ceremony today marked the opening of the City’s 7th off-leash dog park at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park in Kaka‘ako.

Located on the Pohukaina Street-side of the park, the dog park is 7,900 square feet with two entrances to one large fenced area. This makes it different from most dog parks which have separate areas for large and small dogs, but also creates a larger overall area for the dogs and their owners to enjoy.

“It is fitting to add this new dog park in a location named after a persistent reformer like Mother Margaret Waldron,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “That mentality of adapting our public spaces to fit the communities they serve has really come to define the character of the Kaka‘ako, with the City now taking ownership and care of the 40 acres of parks down the street and mural artists applying fresh pieces of artwork throughout the community annually.”

With the future developed of the Pohukaina School anticipated to impact Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park, this facility is being considered a temporary installment.

Last month, the City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the future off-leash dog park at Patsy T. Mink Central O‘ahu Regional Park (CORP) in Waipahū and opened a dog park at Kalo Place Mini Park in Mō‘ili‘ili. The CORP facility is expected to be opened this fall and will be the City’s 8th off-leash dog park.

Named after Margaret Waldron, a well-respected teacher and playground director known for getting the neighborhood youth out of street gangs and into recreational programs, this neighborhood park was opened in 1930 and sits on 1.76 acres of land.

Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park is also one of the 170 parks that has been improved through Mayor Caldwell’s Kākou for Parks Program. Specifically the comfort station was renovated in February 2018 and the play apparatus was refurbished in October 2019.
