The future Centennial Park, located at 425 Royal Hawaiian Ave., is being made possible through a public-private partnership between the City and County of Honolulu and the Rotary Club of Honolulu.
Formerly an undeveloped parcel of city property, this location is just under an acre in size and will provide future generations with a naturally appealing park area amidst a dense residential setting.
“Public-private partnerships, whether here in Waikīkī, Ala Moana Regional Park, or many other parks across O‘ahu, allow us to make a positive difference in the lives of our residents without the use of taxpayer funds,” said Mayor Caldwell. “This type of relationship holds great promise and I believe this is something we should all embrace.”
The park is slated to consist of open grass areas, trees, pedestal benches, an irrigation system, lighted walkways, wrought iron fencing, and decorative gateways along the perimeter of the park.
“It’s an opportunity to provide a space of joy and relaxation for the community and we look forward to seeing that completed,” said Rob Hale, chairman of the Centennial Park Committee for the Rotary Club of Honolulu. “It seems appropriate that we (Rotary Club Hawai‘i) should celebrate our upcoming centennial next year with this new park.”
The estimated cost for the creation of the park is just over $1.53 million, which was gifted to the city by the Rotary Club via Resolution 19-69. The construction of the park is expected to be completed in Summer 2020.
