Communication upgrades resulting in new park facility phone numbers

Internet and phone service switch-over already completed for most of the staffed urban Honolulu parks

HONOLULU -- In an effort to improve connectivity with the public and other agencies and departments, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of Information Technology (DIT) are upgrading communication systems at the majority of staffed DPR facilities.

These upgrades involve migrating internet and phone service to the city's servers, resulting in changing phone numbers for many park facilities. Most of the new phone numbers will begin with the "768" digits commonly associated with City and County of Honolulu agencies and departments.

Currently, many of the changes have been made for park facilities in DPR District I (Hawaiʻi Kai to McCully) and District II (Makiki to ʻAiea), with changes coming soon to the remaining three park districts.

"This upgrade has been a positive change, not only for the public, but our dedicated park staff," said DPR Director Michele Nekota. "It will give our staff better connectivity to the public, on a more capable system, while also saving taxpayer money. Beginning the switchover at park facilities in urban Honolulu enabled us to easily troubleshoot issues, and we are eager to begin the upgrade into the more rural park facilities."

Additional benefits to the upgraded service include the ability for park staff to call different area codes, including neighbor island numbers, and improved access to voicemail messages.

All of the new phone numbers may be viewed at several locations within the DPR website, parks.honolulu.gov. You can find the new phone numbers within the "Park Locations" and "Pool Locations" tabs, as well as on our interactive Google Map, which lists and locates all of the developed DPR locations. Since its launch in 2016, this customized map has been viewed over a quarter of a million times.

If a DPR website is believed to have erroneous information, please let us know by emailing us at parks@honolulu.gov or calling (808) 768-3003. There might exist third-party websites or listings outside of the control of DPR or DIT that list old phone numbers. We encourage the public to please contact those particular sites if they are listing outdated information.

For a roughly two week period following the transition, the old phone numbers will lead to a voice message informing the caller that the phone number has changed and providing the updated number. Following this interim period the old phone numbers will no longer be valid.

We thank the public for their patience while these upgrades are being completed. Further announcements will be made once additional park facility phone numbers are transferred to the new system, but we encourage the public to check the above mentioned websites for the most up-to-date park contact information.
