Selected works will be displayed in the Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards Exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and Gold Key Award recipients move on to the national level Scholastic Art & Writing Awards judging.

NEA: US Trends in Arts Attendance and Literature Reading
New survey findings from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) show gains in arts attendance totals, rates, and demographic groups plus sizeable growth in poetry-reading. Published today, U.S. Trends in Arts Attendance and Literary Reading: 2002-2017 is a first look at results from the 2017 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA). A partnership of the NEA and the U.S. Census Bureau, the SPPA is the nation's largest and longest-running survey of how millions of adults participate in the arts.
Call for Schools: 2019 Poetry Out Loud
During the fall and winter school season, September 2018 -- January 2019, schools are invited to participate in classroom and school wide contests, advancing to a state competition on Sunday February 24, 2019. State champions will advance to the national finals, to take place on April 30--May 1, 2019, in Washington, DC.
The program encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high school students across the country. Poetry Out Loud helps students to develop analytical and public speaking skills, while building self-confidence.
"In today's tumultuous world, poetry is a space for youth to find and use their voice in a powerful way," said Poetry Foundation President Henry Bienen. "Students involved in Poetry Out Loud spend time with the poems they recite, learning to see them from many angles. That deepened connection makes poetry an extension of young people's lives and experiences that they are eager to share."
High schools that wish to be part of the official Poetry Out Loud program must contact Honolulu Theatre for Youth to participate. Honolulu Theatre for Youth will work with interested schools to include them in the official Poetry Out Loud program. Schools that are not in the official program may conduct their own contests using the online resources. It's Your Art: Art in Public Places
At the request of the SFCA Board of Commissioners, the Art in Public Places Program (APP) recently ran a report on Art in Public Places Collection current statistics, including gender identification, first-time purchases, and artwork subjects. Current statistics include:
- 41% of gender identified artists in the Art in Public Places Collection are women.
- 61% of acquisitions by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in the past two years have been first-time purchases (meaning that it is the first time an artist's work has been acquired by the SFCA).
- 38% of artworks in the Art in Public Places Collection are categorized as abstract art (items may have more than one subject matter tag, e.g. Manaiakalani II by Hana Yoshihata has subject tags "abstract" and "Hawaii").

The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

Singers from Hawai‘i Opera Theatre's Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio will perform a selection of arias, art songs and musical theatre pieces.Selections will include some of the famous pieces that you know and love and lesser known gems!
Additional activities on the ground floor with the HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI will include live music, live painting, temporary henna tattoos, and an opening reception for the shop's exhibit of works for sale by Masami Teraoka, Lynda Hess, and Lori Uyehara. The Artizen by MW cafe will have a special menu and the Friends of HiSAM will have a wine and beer bar. $4 valet parking available on Richards St.

The annual Hawai‘i Children & Youth Day event attracts thousands visitors to the Capitol District downtown! You may want to consider taking public transportation, biking, or walking to the event.

TEMPORARY: The SFCA anticipates a temporary vacancy for an Arts Program Specialist III, Exhibit Specialist. Exhibit Specialists work as a team to do installation of artworks from the Art in Public Places collection in sites across the state, including schools, libraries, and state offices. Get Involved: Volunteer Opportunities
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees.The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendationsto the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project,including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of theartist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and makerecommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints thecommittee members for each exhibit visit -- generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members,and Visual Arts Consultants. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (operated by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist museum visitors and help offer a greater understanding of the exhibitions currently on view. If you have an interest or background in the arts, we encourage you to volunteer.
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
- Gallery Attendant -- Assist visitors in the galleries.
- Info Desk Attendant -- Greet and orient visitors to the museum.
- Docent -- Conduct tours of the exhibitions.
- Education Assistant -- Assist with education programs.
- Special Events Assistant -- Assist staff in event coordination.
- General Clerical Help -- Assist staff in office chores.

The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.
In supporting the mission of the SFCA, the Friends of HiSAM have four objectives: (1) expose and engage all grade school students at the museumto the arts in Hawai‘i, (2) encourage all high schooland college students who are focused on the arts through meaningful events and programs at the museum (3) expose, excite, educate and engage those living in and visiting our state to the art and artists of Hawai‘i through visits to the museum, and (4) assist the SFCA in the recognition of Hawaii's art and artists. Most recently, Friends of HiSAM has hosted exhibits of local artists in the museum restaurant, Artizen by MW: Harry Tsuchidana: Forgotten Paintings; Across Generations, featuring Satoru Abe, Hamilton Kobayashi, and Kainoa Gruspe; Across Generations II, featuring Ka-Ning Fong and Erin Marquez; Yvonne Cheng: Recent Works; The 2017 HiSAM Portfolio Artists Show; Across Generations: Charles Higa and Michael Teruya; the Hawaii Master Artists Show; and Hawai‘i Artists 2018 Portfolio Project. Friends of HiSAM has also hosted a soft opening for the new museum shop, HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI.
The museum cafe and museum shop are independently operated under a lease agreement between the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.

Hawaii State Government Resources
The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) has released the 2017 edition of the "State of Hawaii Data Book."
The book is in electronic form and is available on the DBEDT website at: dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook. The data may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.
The state's Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, classified into 24 sections, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, environment, economics, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.
"The Data Book is the most popular item on the DBEDT website, and this year marks the 50th edition," said DBEDT Director Luis P. Salaveria. "DBEDT researchers collected and compiled data from all private and public sources about all aspects of Hawaii and put them together to create this comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to know Hawaii."
Section 7, Recreation and Travel, includes information on Performing Arts, Symphony Orchestra Activities, and Attendance at Museums and other Cultural Attractions.
For information on nationwide arts and culture economic impact: Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 (produced by Americans for the Arts, a non-profit organization).
The Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) is a part of the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Outreach College, and offers the artistry of international national, and local artists and cultural experts to communities across the state. Programs range from The Art of Cartooning to Taiko Drumming and are usually offered in conjunction with co-sponsoring organizations such as libraries, schools, senior centers, nursing homes, parks, prisons, and community centers. Interested groups in the community may request performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and residencies from SCEP's roster of artists and cultural experts. This program is supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
