Art in Public Places
S.U.R.F at Sunset Beach Elementary School / Jodi Endicott / bronze sculpture / 2017 / Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts
S.U.R.F. at Sunset Beach Elementary School
S.U.R.F., a bronze, concrete and glass sculpture by Jodi Endicott, was dedicated at Sunset Beach Elementary School on February 1, 2017. Sunset Beach Elementary School is on the North Shore of the island of O`ahu. For this Art in Public Places -- Artists in Residence Program project, the artist, Jodi Endicott, was selected by an Art Advisory Committee, who also assisted with the selection of a location, the medium and theme of the work of art, and review of the design proposals. Sunset Beach Elementary School students and community members participated as part of the educational component, designed to include student and teacher participation in the conceptualization, design, construction, and installation of the commissioned work of art at the school.
S.U.R.F. embodies the core values of Sunset Beach Elementary School: Self-discipline, Unity, Respect, and Friendship. This larger-than-life book celebrates the natural beauty of the area, which continually serves as an inspiration for residents and newcomers alike. A Hawaiian monk seal, an individual spirit, points the way toward education and learning and reminds us t care for the environment and all of its inhabitants.

Artists in the Schools Grant Applications
The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) is now accepting Artists in the Schools (AITS) grant applications for the 2017-2018 school year. All public schools, including public charter schools, may apply for grants of up to $6,000 per school for artist residencies to be conducted during the 2017-2018 school year. Schools must contribute 10% of the grant amount received, in cash, towards residency expenses. AITS grants are meant to enhance a school's fine arts curriculum, not supplant it.
The AITS Program provides students with an engaging, creative and fun learning experience based on the Fine Arts standards through residencies with teaching artists from the Artistic Teaching Partners Roster (on our website: ATP Roster 2017-2018). Many of these artists integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas, such as language arts, math, social studies and science, meeting both Fine Arts and other core standards.
We are excited to announce a new category of AITS funding specifically for Neighbor Island schools that have an HSFCA Art in Public Places commissioned work of art on campus that was installed after 1993. The list of eligible schools is on our website, along with FAQs about this new pilot project: AITS Program
The application is due no later than May 2, 2017 at 4:00pm. For more information, please contact Vivien Lee at 586-0768 or vivien.lee@hawaii.gov.
