Tuesday October 17th

9:00 - 10:30am

A FREE PRESENTATION IN AUDITORIUM FREEFREE FRR

I am pleased to make this announcement about an upcoming event. A good friend Dennis Kim will be coming and talking about our vanishing native plant species and will present a slide show of the many flowers and plants he has used such as Mau hau Hele is the states original flower the hibiscus.

Dennis spent over 50 years in the landscape industry and was an award winner Landscape Architect and Planner, contractor and nurseryman. The last 20 years of his career working on the preservation of Hawaii's native flora as a propagator, educator and advocate in educating the public and those in the Landscape industry about the importance to save our species. His success is evident by the number of native species used in today's landscape installations, and the requirement by governmental agencies and the military requiring natives be used on all future projects. A while back Mr. Kim donated 15 native plants to WCC and a senior class from Punahou under the supervision of their teacher Carl Ackerman planted them in the backyard and a kukui nut tree.

SENIOR PROGRAMS

Approximately 25% of Waikiki's residents are over the age of 62, many of whom live alone or without family nearby. WCC provides a wide variety of educational and social activities to help maintain their physical, cognitive and emotional health and independent lifestyles to avoid premature aging, isolation and institutionalization. On any day of the week, you'll find older adults (and young adults, too) participating in dance classes (ballroom, line, tap), wellness classes, yoga, hula, English As A Second Language, foreign language classes, music, bridge, arts and crafts and outings to places old and new. We welcome you to Waikiki Community Center, stop by and visit us!

For seniors and their caregivers, finding the right services to assist with challenges, identifying the right support systems, and contacting and explaining one's situation can be very overwhelming! Sometimes seeking help is like speaking a foreign language. Let us help! Waikiki Community Center is so fortunate to have Judy Taketa, MSW, LSW working with the Malama Seniors in Waikiki Program. Ms. Judy Taketa is on-site and available for appointments on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call (808) 923-1802 to schedule an appointment for this valuable, free service.
