VISUAL LITERACY 101

Event: Art Lunch at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum with Calvin Collins

Location: 250 South Hotel St.

Multipurpose Room, First Floor

Date: Tuesday November 29, 2016

Time: 12:00 pm -- 1:00 pm

Cost: free

Additional information: Visual Literacy 101 is for anyone interested in developing his or her ability to unlock the meaning of images. Learn to first look, then to see, read, and navigate visual images and intensify your engagement with art and the greater world around us. Calvin Collins is a design instructor at Kapiolani Community College.


Art Lunch at HiSAM is a monthly "meet the artist" lecture series that takes place on the last Tuesday of each month. Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch or buy lunch at Artizen (HiSAM's café, also on the first floor) to eat during the lecture.

The Hawaii State Art Museum galleries will be open. Admission is always free.

Parking: across the street at Ali‘i Place (entrance at 1099 Alakea St.) or Iolani Palace.

FIRST FRIDAY at HiSAM

Event: First Friday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum - live bluegrass music with the North Shore Ramblers

Location: Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM)

250 South Hotel St., Second Floor

Downtown Honolulu

Date: Friday, November 4, 2016

Time: 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM

Cost: free

Additional information: Sculpture Lobby (second floor, between the museum galleries); seating will be provided. Museum galleries will be open (entry and admission are always free), including the newest exhibit, "Accession", featuring recent acquisitions by the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the "I Love Art" hands-on activity room for kids. First Friday at HiSAM is a casual, family-friendly event.

BIG ISLAND

Hawaii Concert Society

Presenting fine music and dance on the Big Island of Hawaii

Event: Wayward Sisters concert. Since 2009, this award-winning early music ensemble has dazzled audiences across the United States, bringing freshness and intimacy to 17th and 18th century music. Their concert is titled "The Naughty List: Music by Braggarts, Hotheads, Curmudgeons and Snobs." Prepare to be regaled by music written by the bad boys of the early Baroque.

Event: Dover String Quartet concert. Winners of the Grand Prize and all three Special Prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, this young American quartet has already reached the top echelons of chamber music performance according to numerous critics, and has become one of the most in demand ensembles in the world, with over 100 concerts last year.

KAUAI

Honolulu Theatre for Youth

Event: H2O, The Story of Water and Hawaii. We drink it, play in it, depend on it, but do we understand the storiesand the science behind this important substance? This musical exploresthe cultural, historical, environmental and physical properties of waterthrough song, humor and interactive story telling.

Date: Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7:00pm

Location: Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center

Cost: General Admission $10

Additional Information: School Performances will also take place on Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. Call Honolulu Theatre for Youth at 808-839-9885 for more information about School Performances.


OAHU

The Leeward Theatre at Leeward Community College

Event: Tartuffe. A comedy in five acts, this stage play was first performed in 1664.

Location: Leeward Theatre Alternate Space (AM 101), Leeward Community College

Dates: November 11, 12, 17, 18 at 8:00 p.m.; November 13 & 19 at 4:00 p.m.

Cost: General Admission $15, Leeward Community College students $10.

Event: Leeward Coast Guitars Fall Concert. An afternoon of guitar ensembles, duets and solos. Stage works by Mozart, Machado, Handel, Dowland and others. Directed by Peter Frary. Seating is limited.
