MELE MEI ANNOUNCES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

AWARD HONOREES FOR 2014

Sam and Gary ‘Aikō -- The Aiko Brothers are the talented sons of the beloved Genoa Keawe. The late Sam ‘Āiko's treasured silky voice is heard on many of his mother's recordings, while Gary ‘Āiko's deep, rich baritone is featured on several records (including solo recordings).

‘Iwalani Wilson Kahalewai -- The late singer was one of Hawai‘i's great soprano voices, and a regular cast member of the Hawai‘i Calls radio show and recording artist. She also had a wealth of Hawaiian music knowledge and was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band's singing ensemble.

Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole -- Affectionately referred to as "Bruddah Iz," he was the beloved lead singer of the famed Mākaha Sons of Ni‘ihau from 1976 through 1992. Later in his solo career he earned fame worldwide with his albums, which were certified gold in sales.

Cyril Pahinui -- Son of renowned slack key master Gabby Pahinui and a kī hō‘alu master in his own right, this multi Na Hoku Hanohano winner perpetuates the craft through his recordings and by performing and teaching slack key music.

Ben Wood -- The long time entertainment columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and now for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Ben has covered and supported musicians and recording artists in Hawai‘i for decades.

Krash Kealoha (Industry) Award

Polynesian Cultural Center -- The Polynesian-themed living museum featuring seven villages with performers demonstrating various arts and crafts, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Center continues to share and educate on the diversity of culture in Hawai‘i and has produced several recordings documenting the various music of Hawai‘i, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, the Marquesas, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga.

Said Pali Ka'aihue, co-creator of Mele Mei and President of HARA, "We are fortunate in Hawai‘i to have such pioneers in the music industry who have set such high levels of achievement for others to follow." Ka'aihue continued, "The annual Lifetime Achievement Awards is a way of showing our respect and great appreciation to these kupuna (ancestors) and to thank them for what they have contributed to our community and industry.

Now in its fourth successful year, Mele Mei (translated as "May, Hawaiian Music Month") dedicates the month of May to featuring an impressive line-up of artists and industry icons, as well as a new generation of musicians. Various genres of Hawai`i's music are represented from traditional Hawaiian and contemporary Hawaiian music, as well as 'ukulele, slack key, jazz, rock, rap, hip-hop, and alternative. Mele Mei culminates with the grand finale, the 37th annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards show on Saturday, May 24th, held at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Sponsored by the Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA), and the Hawai`i Tourism Authority (HTA), the Mele Mei 2014 program will include the Lei of Stars Dinner Concert on May 1st, the Hawaii Youth Symphony Luncheon on May 18th, ‘Ukulele Picnic on May 25th, plus a variety of hula events at the Waikīkī Hula Mound.
