  • Mele Mei And Ala Moana Hotel Partnership

Pali Ka'aihue, co--‐creator of Mele Mei and President of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) announced that the Ala Moana Hotel has been named the "Official Hotel of the 36th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards." The Mele Mei events take place all throughout the month of May 2013 (www.melemei.com/events) with the culmination leading up to the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards show on May 25th, which is held at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Says Ka'aihue, "The Ala Moana Hotel has been a great supporter of not only Mele Mei and HARA but also by assisting us in exposing the variety of music coming from Hawaii, and we are thrilled to continue this partnership once again." Marty Milan, director of sales and marketing adds, "We are honored to be a sponsor of this exciting festival and awards show, and encourage both locals and visitors to take advantage of the special room rates and fully enjoy the Mele Mei experience!"

The Ala Moana Hotel has quite a history with the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, as it was the original home in 1978. However, as the popularity of the show grew, it also outgrew the space at the Ala Moana Hotel and eventually made its way into its current home of the 35,000 square foot Kalākaua Ballroom at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, directly across the street from the hotel.

Translated in Hawaiian, Mele Mei means "May, Hawaiian Music Month." A series of workshops, events and performances are held throughout various venues in Hawaii, primarily throughout Honolulu and Waikiki on O`ahu, and on Maui. Now in its third year, the entire month of May 2013 will be dedicated to featuring an impressive line--‐up of artists and industry icons, as well as a new generation of musicians, representing each genre of Hawai`i's music from traditional Hawaiian to contemporary, `ukulele to the steel guitar, reggae to rock--‐n--‐roll, as well as new alternative indie sounds.

Mele Mei is sponsored by the Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA), the Hawai`i Tourism Authority (HTA), Kintetsu International, and Kinki Nippon Tourist. Highlights of the festival include the Lifetime Achievement Awards Luncheon on April 27th honoring those who have helped shape Hawai`i‘s music industry, the first--‐ever `Ukulele, Slack Key and Steel Guitar Jam on May 19th, which will take place directly across historic Waikiki Beach, as well as the continuation of the popular Nā Hōkū Hanohano Music Festival Workshops held throughout the year, with the first one to be held on May 24th. Of course, the month of May ends with the main event, the 36th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards Show on May 25th, celebrating the best of the best in Hawai`i‘s music industry.
